About This Technique

Emotional self-regulation or emotion regulation refers to pausing between experiencing an emotion and reacting to it. When a person reacts impulsively without paying attention to what is going on internally, they may deviate from their core values and choose unhealthy behaviors. With appropriate self-control, people can stay calm under pressure and prevent themselves from acting against their core values and ethics. These are the elements of self-regulation:

  • Self-awareness
  • Mindful awareness
  • Cognitive reappraisal
  • Adaptability
  • Self-compassion
  • Emotional support

About This Room

This Room contains daily mood rating scales for clients to rate their moods from 1 to 10. There are also four Emotional Regulation Techniques in the room: the Breathing Element, a video on using mindfulness to deal with upsetting emotions, a Progressive Relaxation audio, and a worksheet called the “Resist Technique.”
